Big Build Update
We are getting close to finishing our renovation of Cobdown House. The beautiful new tiling matching the original flooring discovered recently is complete in the West Events entrance, as is all the flooring in the old part of the house. Our ‘Folly’ in the East entrance, the old outside access to the basement, is just waiting for the walkable glass to be added.
One of the fire safety requirements as part of the rebuild was to introduce new firebreak walls at the top and bottom of the original staircases. Given this was such a great feature of the house back in 1856 we instead opted for fire-glazing. A huge additional cost but one that retained as much as possible the open feel and allowing through as much light as possible.
The roof of Orangery is finished and with the top lift of scaffolding now down you can see what a magnificent addition to the house this will be creating a second events area. All the Orangery glazing should be in place by the end of the month.
The Old Summer House
We found some documents in the Kent archives showing Cobdown, as it was known then, as a separate estate agent’s lot for the property sale in 1898 of the late owner’s assets. This included this overview of the Advo offices. We knew there was a Summer House somewhere in the grounds, now with these new documents we have a good indication of it’s location.
Overlaying on Google maps we now have a good idea where it is or was!
So off we set to have a look…
So, did we find it???
We think so, well at least where it was! – flat area where the map says it should be in the ancient woodland, but all ivy and bramble covered. A few fragments of occupation seem to confirm this.
We will need to embark on an expedition shortly to find out more!
Rooms to Let…
Cobdown House will be ready for tenants in January 2027. As the Cobdown House site has considerable flexibility it will will be a mixture of Advo’s Head Office, Tenants, Board Room day-rental meetings and events. For our longer-term Tenants we are working with local commercial estate agents, Harrisons. Sales brochures are ready to go and we have already started showing potential Tenants around. As can be seen there is considerable scope for smaller SMEs and larger companies.
